A Jamaican mobile telephone company, Digicel, has applied to set up operations in Fiji in competition with the monopoly company, Vodafone Fiji.

Fiji TV reports that Digicel, which already sponsors the West Indies cricket team, has offered to sponsor Fiji's national sevens rugby team for US$600,000 a year.

It has also offered to provide mobile telephone coverage in Fiji's rural areas.

The minister for information and telecommunications, Marieta Rigamoto, says the government is interested in rural coverage and has asked Digicel to find a local partner and resubmit its application.
