PNG gun dealer admits importing high powered guns illegally

A Papua New Guinea gun dealer has admitted importing high-powered firearms which were confiscated at the international airport in March.

This follows reports in the newspaper, the National, that the importation was done without the Commissioner of Police knowing about it.

The Commissioner is the only authority able to approve such a transaction.

The gun dealer, MEL Management Services, says the company went through proper procedures before the importation was effected.

The National says documents authorising the approval show lower ranking police officers had been involved in making the importation possible.
