A rafting accident in Papua New Guinea has left two Israeli citizens dead, at least two more wounded and another missing.

Reports from Israel say the travellers had been part of a group of 12 Israelis who had gone white water rafting.

A travel company in Israel, had sent the team to map the area for future travelers.

Israel's Consul in Australia, Sharon Polishuk, said efforts to recover the bodies and locate the missing Israeli are set to resume in earnest at first light this morning.

The team was traveling in three boats when they overturned for reasons as yet unknown.

Mr Polishuk said it had taken one of the group 20 hours to walk to the nearest phone to report the accident.
