Fiji miners still want compensation for 13 year strike

Members of the Fiji Mineworkers Union who have been on strike since 1991 want to be compensated for their loss of earnings in the country's longest running industrial dispute.

The union secretary, Kavekini Navuso, has told the Fiji Sun that they want 24-million US dollars for their 400 members.

The strike in 1991 was over the Emperor Gold Mining Company's refusal to recognise the union.

A 1995 commission of inquiry finding in favor of the striking mineworkers was challenged by Emperor and overturned in the High Court this year.

Mr Navuso says it is the duty of the government to compensate the strikers if the company does not want to reinstate them.
