French Polynesia decides against selling Flosse plane

1:18 pm on 2 July 2004

The French Polynesian government has decided not to sell an aircraft used by the ousted President, Gaston Flosse, after an election campaign that described the plane as a symbol of extravagance.

The vice-president, Jacqui Drollet, says a sale would mean a big loss because the purchase price was too high, owing to import duties.

Mr Drollet has proposed that Air Tahiti uses the ATR 42 plane for medical evacuations.

He has also warned, the budget inherited from the previous administration, is faced with a deficit of about 1-hundred and 40 million, US dollars.

The new administration has confirmed that autonomy celebrations will be held on July 12th before the new President, Oscar Temaru, heads off to Paris for key talks with the French government.

It's also announced that Mr Temaru will attend a 3-day meeting of all mayors in the Marquesas islands in early August to discuss local development issues.
