Fiji cracks down on outlawed passenger vehicles

10:34 am on 1 July 2004

Fiji's land transport authority says public service vehicles operating without a yellow number plate today will be de-registered.

This will affect 7,923 public vehicles, which include minibuses, carriers, rental cars and taxis.

A spokesman for the LTA, Ratu Eroni Volavola, says they had to do something against illegal operators.

"The Land Transport Authority took it a step further and started putting it into practise. It's to safeguard them, its to safeguard their livelihood and the LTA hopes they'll assist us in that all their members take up the yellow number plates so that we can get rid of illegal operators."
