Complaint over entry to Solomon Islands airport VIP lounge

10:35 am on 20 May 2004

The Solomon Islands foreign affairs department has lodged a protest with the Regional Police Force following a recent incident at Honiara's international airport.

The foreign secretary Peter Forau has written a protest note to the acting head of the police force, Ben Mc Devitt, after police broke the seals to gain access to the airport's VIP lounge.

Mr Forau says the incident is serious because the lounge may only be opened by foreign affairs staff.

Reports say the police forced their way into the lounge to prepare it for an early morning departure of a high-level Australian delegation to Vanuatu because no foreign affairs staff were available.
