SPREP boss defends sacking procedure

3:56 pm on 6 April 2004

The director of the Samoa-based environmental organisation, SPREP, says it's unfortunate that his efforts to resolve an employment dispute fairly have been misconstrued as harassment.

Asterio Takesy says he has dealt with the matter in accordance with SPREP regulations and says for privacy reasons he cannot discuss the matter publicly.

His comment comes after the lawyer acting on behalf of one of the two sacked women accused Mr Takesy of continuing to harass them and of violating their human rights.

The lawyer Olinda Woodroffe says Mr Takesy appears to think that his immunity can give him a passport to break the law.

She has written to regional government leaders funding SPREP and asked them to intervene and stop the alleged abuse.
