A United Nations representative says some Afghan detainees on Nauru will be granted refugee status.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees regional representative, Michel Gabaudan, says some of the people it is reassessing will be recognised as refugees.
The Australian Associated Press says the UNHCR decided to reassess 22 people it originally rejected, because it believes Afghanistan had become more dangerous.
Its decision will put pressure on the Australian federal government, which assessed the rest of the detainees, and has promised to look at any new information the UNHCR provides about changed conditions in Afghanistan.
Around 35 detainees are continuing their hunger strike in protest at their continued detention.
