8:50 am on 5 August 2003

French Polynesia's Evangelical Church has chosen Pastor Taarii Maraea as its new president to replace Jacques Ihorai.

The synod in Tahiti has also elected Marthe Tematahotoa as the first woman in the clergy.

The Evangelical Church, which is French Polynesia's biggest congregation, has been strongly opposed to French nuclear testing and has been an advocate of the Tahitian language.
