Solomon Islands police who are found in possession of illegal guns after ten pm tonight Solomon Islands time, will be sacked immediately.

This comes from Australian Ben McDevitt who was sworn in by the Governor General Father Sir John Ini Lapli this morning as Deputy Police Commissioner.

The Commissioner Bill Morrel told a media conference that he was putting Mr McDevitt in charge of several priority areas.

These are the collection and disposal of weapons, enforcing the amnesty, details of which are expected to be announced shortly, policing on the Weather Coast and discipline in the police force.

Mr McDevitt says officers who fail to hand in guns by tonight will also face criminal prosecution.
