Solomon airport name change debate continues

4:48 pm on 27 June 2003

People in the Shortland islands in Solomon Islands plan to give the airstrip at Balalae a Japanese name.

This comes amid a debate on whether to change the name of the country's only international airport from Henderson Airfield.

The government is considering calling it Yamamoto airport as part of a bid to attract Japanese aid to upgrade the airport and the prisons.

Parliament has discussed the possibility of a name change, but no paper has been presented on the matter to date.

The Japanese government has already funded the airport terminal building.

Henderson airport was named after an American pilot who died fighting the Japanese in the Pacific during the Second World War.
