The Papua New Guinea Finance Department will place financial controllers in major departments and government agencies to ensure greater transparency and accountability of public funds.
The Post Courier reports that the controllers will monitor financial transactions to ensure budgets are adhered to, and as well to provide monthly reports to Finance and Treasury.
The Finance Secretary, Thaddeus Kambanei says departments that consistently overspend are Defence, Police, Correctional Services, Health and Education.
He says the controllers will also have the power to recommend disciplinary action against any person responsible for irregular or fraudulent transactions, misappropriation of funds or for refusing to provide financial information.
