Deputy Commissioner says no need for concern over Weather Coast incident

The Solomon Islands deputy police commissioner, Wilfred Akao, says a suspected armed conflict on the Weather Coast should not worry the public.

Mr Akao says police are still investigating a shooting incident which has led to 11 people being reported missing.

The investigation started after rumours that a boat full of people from Honiara had left for the Weather Coast and had been attacked.

The Weather Coast is where an armed rebel group called the Guadacanal Liberation Front is based.

Mr Akao says people in the Solomons should not be too concerned.

"I think what people have in mind is that these people went there for whatever purpose......themselveand whatever happens to them is not the concern of the people in Solomon Islands."

Wilfred Akao says he cannot confirm what organisation the Honiara people were from.
