Church leaders in Solomon Islands have spoken out strongly against attempts to dump industrial waste from Taiwan on Makira island.
The plan is opposed by the Taiwanese Government, but some members of the Solomons government are still pushing for the trade to go ahead.
They say it will allow the development of Makira.
The Chairman of the Solomon Islands Christian Association, Sir Ellison Pogo, says they are gravely concerned by the plan, and has called on the Government abandon it.
Sir Ellison says the dumping of the waste will have far reaching impacts on the environment, the Solomon Islands and its neighbours, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.
He says if Solomon Islands is offered hundreds of millions of dollars to accept waste from another country, then without a doubt there is something very wrong with it.
