At the end of each episode of KPopped, the audience assesses the visuals, vocals and choreography of each song and then votes for which song has been "KPopped" the best, executive producer Moira Ross told ABC News.

Kylie Minogue is one of the artists who've signed up to have her song 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' reworked by the South Korean boy band Ateez, Ross says.

"Kylie reinvents herself as the eternal pop princess all the while, so it's very fitting."

Minogue flew to South Korea, where KPopped is filmed, to collaborate with members of Ateez, Ms Ross said.

"It wasn't her very first experience of Seoul, but I think she stayed on a couple of extra days so that she could really explore and enjoy her time out in Korea.

"And she was just so open to the whole format and working with Ateez.

"Part of the format of the show is that the visiting artists get to experience cultural moments, and, of course, with Kylie, Ateez took her along to a traditional fan dance, and they had a great time."

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who is an executive producer on the show, and Psy, who is behind the viral hit 'Gangnam Style', star in KPopped, which invites icons Boy George, Patti LaBelle, the Spice Girls, Boyz II Men, TLC, Taylor Dayne, Eve, Kesha, J Balvin, Ava Max, Jess Glynne, Vanilla Ice and Minogue, to have their songs KPopped by idols Billie, Itzy, Kep1er, JO1, Stayc, Kiss of Life, Blackswan and Ateez.

Ms Ross said it wasn't hard to get the global icons involved.

"They're all big fans of K-pop," Ms Ross said.

"And when they heard the concept, they very much were like, 'Yeah, I'm in.'

"There was a huge enthusiasm from the artists that we reached out to."

So, whose idea was it to put together KPopped versions of hits?

"This actually goes back to 2021," fellow executive producer Jake Hong said.

"CJ [Group] vice chairwoman Ms Miky Lee met with the legend Mr Lionel Richie, both executive producers on the show.

"Lionel Richie was talking about how impressed and surprised he was by seeing all these K-pop phenomenons and young K-pop talents, and Ms Lee was telling Lionel that all these great K-pop talents, actually, they're inspired by Lionel, your music, and what you've created — the great pop culture.

"They were discussing, could there be a TV show where it could be a cross-cultural show, where it shows the most amazing talents of both worlds?"

The show's creators are hoping KPopped appeals to diehard fans of K-pop and the music icons featured, as well as new fans of the combined genre.

"KPopped is about celebrating music and creativity, really without borders," Mr Hong said.

"So, whether you're discovering a new genre or reconnecting with the familiar hit, it really is a celebration of great music, with [great] artists."

KPopped is streaming on Apple TV+ from Friday 29 August.
