    ‘Indigenous people from Niue or Friendly Islands’. In 1853 the Eugenie, a Swedish vessel on a circumnavigation of the world stopped off at Niue. These  subsequent sketches of men encountered on the voyage are the first known portraits of Niueans. Their beards contain ornamental items.
