Woman killed in police pursuit crash was 21

The woman who died in a crash following a police pursuit north of Wellington on Saturday night was 21 years old, police say.

The police said the crash happened on Kenepuru Drive at about 8.30pm yesterday following a two minute pursuit through central Porirua after the the driver failed to stop for a routine check.

The crash occurred on Kenepuru Drive at about 8.30pm on Saturday following a two-minute pursuit through central Porirua after the the driver failed to stop for a routine check, police said.

The pair were taken to hospital but the 21-year-old Wellington woman died overnight.

The driver, 42, from the Horowhenua region, is in a stable condition with serious injuries, and he will be released into police custody today.

He will appear in Wellington District Court later today on unrelated charges and a charge of failing to stop. The investigation into fleeing driver charges is ongoing.

Police are still working to inform the deceased's next of kin, and are yet to name the pair.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
