A heavy rain warning has been issued for Westland, with a front forecast to cross the lower South Island tomorrow.
Met Service was forecasting up to 120 millimetres of rain in the ranges over a 15 hour period from midday tomorrow, with rainfall of up to 90 millimetres expected at lower levels.
It said the rain could cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly, and slips and surface flooding are possible.
A severe weather warning has been issued for Westland and Taranaki, which will bring heavy rain until early Sunday morning.
The MetService says a severe gale warning is in place for Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and eastern Waikato tonight, and there's more bad weather ahead this week.
