Gales ahead for some North Island areas

10:06 pm on 14 December 2014

The MetService says a severe gale warning is in place for Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and eastern Waikato tonight, and there's more bad weather ahead this week.

Many parts of the upper North Island have been battered by heavy rain and strong winds today.

MetService forecaster, Leigh Matheson, says winds gusting up to 120 kilometres an hour are still affecting some areas but should ease overnight.

However she says another low coming in from the Tasman Sea is expected to hit Auckland, the Bay of Plenty and Gisborne, from Tuesday onwards.

Leigh Matheson says the upper South Island can expect the rain as well.
