A green discolouration was found at the northern end of Lake Hayes last week.

The Otago Regional Council said the water was being tested to check whether it was cyanobacteria - which can produce toxins harmful to people and animals.

The council says people should take a precautionary approach and stay out of Lake Hayes.

Dogs should also not be allowed in the water.
