Third terms for Whangārei and Far North mayors

Sheryl Mai has been re-elected as the Mayor of Whangārei, winning her third term in office.

Roads campaigner Alex Wright, and lawyer Tony Savage challenged Ms Mai - who received more than 12,000 votes to Mr Savage's almost 9000 in the preliminary count.

And Far North Mayor John Carter has also won his third term in the position.

The mayoral race attracted 10 nominees in a region where the population has grown by 10,000 since Mr Carter, a former National Party MP, first won the mayoralty in 2013.
