A new freedom camping facility is to be established on Whanganui's Anzac Parade as the city struggles with growing tourism.
The government will pay half of the project's estimated cost of $250,000.
The site will include toilets and a campervan dump station.
Toilets will also be built at Jerusalem on the Whanganui River Road, where up to 100 cars a day are parked by visitors to the Sisters of Compassion convent.
If the Catholic nun Mother Aubert is canonised, she will become New Zealand's first saint, and the district council believes the area will come under more stress.
