Day four of competition at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games saw 5 more medals added to New Zealand's total.

New Zealand is now sixth on the medal table, behind Australia, England, Canada, India and Scotland.

It was another medal haul on the last day of track cycling at the Anna Meares velodrome.

Eddie Dawkins won silver in the men's time trial at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, adding to the gold he won in the men's team sprint.

Dawkins broke the Commonwealth Games record in his ride, becoming the first man to go under the magic one minute mark with a time of 59.928 seconds.

He stayed in the gold medal position until the very last rider, Australian Matthew Glaetzer, took to the velodrome and beat the Commonwealth Games record again with a time of 59.340 to claim gold and push the New Zealander into second.

Natasha Hansen won bronze in the women's keirin.

She adds to the two silver medals she won in the women's team sprint and women's individual sprint.

And teenage track cyclist Campbell Stewart claimed his second silver medal of the Games after finishing second in the men's points race.

The 19-year-old rode a superb race, consistently taking points to finish just 11 points behind the winner Mark Stewart of Scotland.

Lawn bowler Jo Edwards defended her Commonwealth Games gold medal.

She beat Welsh singles player Laura Daniels 21-17 after making a late comeback to win the gold medal.

Edwards looked down and out and was having a lot of trouble with her opening bowls.

But the experience of the 47-year-old, who's at her fourth Commonwealth Games, came through and she clawed her way back in the last six ends.

On the opening day of the athletics, Alana Barber won a silver medal in the women's 20km race walk.

Barber finished in a time of 1:34:19, behind Australia's Jemima Montag who did the race in 132:50. Wales' Bethan Davies finished third in 1:36:08.

The race leader, Australia's Claire Tallent was disqualified with three laps to go.

The Blacks Sticks women must now draw or win against Australia, or hope for a good score differential, after a disappointing draw with the much lower-ranked Canada.

And the Silver Ferns face a similar scenario - needing to beat England, after a shock loss to Malawi.

In a much more comfortable position is shot putter Tom Walsh, who will throw in his final today having set a new Commonwealth record in qualifying.

Walsh threw 22.45metres - nearly two metres further than his nearest rival.

The previous record of 21.61m was set by Jamaican O'Dayne Richards at Glasgow four years ago.

"Last time I did that (threw a record in qualifying) four years ago and I didn't win the final, so hopefully I don't do anything like that tomorrow," he told reporters.

Tom Walsh is in action at Carrara Stadium at 10:20pm NZ time.

Paul Coll and Joelle King will both play for a gold medal in squash, and paraswimmer Sophie Pascoe swims in the 100m breaststroke.
