New Zealand has won a gold and two silver medals in cycling on day one of the Commonwealth Games.

The defending champion men's sprint team took gold, beating England by just under a second.

The women's team sprint team of Emma Cumming and Natasha Hansen finished behind Australia to take silver.

The women's 4000m pursuit team won New Zealand's first medal of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

New Zealand won silver beaten by hosts Australia at the velodrome in Brisbane.

Australia went into race as gold medal favourites having set a Commonwealth Games record in qualifying and posting a time that was five seconds faster.
