Hewitt won a bronze medal at the Melbourne Games 12 years ago and, along with Rebecca Spence and Nicole van der Kaay, will line up in the women's individual event which starts at 11.30am.

Last year, Hewitt won a world cup event on the Gold Coast and today's race will be on a similar course with a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.

Her main rival is Australian Ashleigh Gentle.

Lawn bowler Jo Edwards will be the first New Zealander to compete at these games, taking to the greens in the women's singles half an hour before the triathlon begins.

With backstroke swimmers struggling to swim straight in the open-air pool, we'll see just how much this disadvantages the kiwi team as Corey Main hits the water just before 2pm for the men's 100m backstroke.

At the velodrome - medals will be up for grabs tonight in the men's team sprint where New Zealand are defending games champions while the women's team pursuit and the men's team pursuit could also be in the medal hunt.

The Silver Ferns play Uganda in their opening game tonight while New Zealanders will also contest the opening rounds of swimming, weightifting, boxing, hockey, gymnastics and squash on the opening day of the Games.

New Zealand has sent a 250-strong team, it's largest ever, to compete in the 2018 Games.
