3:06 Classic Concert: The Beach Boys
Featuring doo-wop harmonies and perfectly pitched teenage lyrics, The Beach Boys challenged the Beatles for the hearts and wallets of the youth of America. This set was recorded live at The Civic Auditorium in Sacramento, August 1964, and four years in to their career. And it really sounds live, complete with screaming teenage audience, as the band play their early bubblegum surf pop hits and interestingly, a few covers that only ever featured in their live repertoire. The ballads such as "In My Room" and the faster pop hit "I Get Around "show that the band could recreate the vocal harmonies live, but without the finesse and lushness of Brian Wilson's studio production. At this point in his career, Wilson is still lucid, cherubic and fresh faced. Within three years he would have a nervous breakdown and quit live work (Capitol)
