The New Zealand Olympic team has collected 19 medals at the Tokyo Games - a new record - and there might be more to come.

The medals and tray to be used for the medal ceremonies at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games are seen during an event to mark 50 days to the opening ceremony, at Ariake Arena in Tokyo on June 3, 2021.

When cyclist Campbell Stewart collected a silver medal in the men's omnium yesterday, he took the medal count past the last record.

The medal haul at that point was seven gold, six silver and six bronze. Overall, Aotearoa is ranking eighth at the games.

New Zealand collected 18 medals at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

With three days of events left (including Friday), there are still opportunities to increase that number.

On Friday, Lisa Carrington is set to team up to compete in the women's K4 500m canoe sprint heats.

Lydia Ko will look to push her way up the field when she tees off for round three of the women's golf event.

Quentin Rew will race for a medal when he embarks on the mammoth 50km men's walk event.

Rushlee Buchanan and Jessie Hodges will team up in the madison event final as they look to bring home New Zealand's third track cycling medal.

And the New Zealand equestrian team are scheduled to compete in qualification for the open team jumping event - the team will be hoping to ensure qualification to the team jumping final on Saturday in their last chance to secure New Zealand's first equestrian medal of the Tokyo Olympics.

As of this morning, China was in pole position to top the Olympics medal table for the second time as the Games headed into the final weekend of competition.
