Kennett had won two straight omnium events going into the race to vault him into fourth overall and back in medal contention.

However, the New Zealander faded during the long distance run to finish eighth overall.

The omnium was won by Italy's Elia Viviani.

Earlier this morning, Kennett won both the 1km time trial and the flying lap event in a stunning time of 12.506 seconds, ahead of Mark Cavendish, who posted 12.793.

Cavendish claimed silver for Great Britain.

Meanwhile, Lauren Ellis is eighth overall after three events of the women's omnium.

Natasha Hansen finished ninth in the women's sprint earlier this morning.
