A person has died after their car veered off the road, across train tracks and down a bank north of Wellington today.

The crash off State Highway 1 at Ōtaki happened just before 5pm, and the car eventually came to a stop on the new Peka Peka to Ōtaki road.
Medical assistance was provided but the driver died at the scene.
Police enquiries are continuing to find out exactly what happened.
