Palmerston North residents are being asked to urgently conserve water, after the main waterpipe burst this morning.

The pipe is under repair which should be completed by early tomorrow morning, but it's currently preventing water from getting from the dam to the city.

The Palmerston North City Council says the damage means they are relying on reservoirs and bores to get water to homes and businesses.

"We are asking all residents, including Ashhurst, Longburn, Linton and Bunnythorpe to avoid unnecessary use of water," says chief executive Heather Shotter.

It's urging residents to only use water for drinking, cooking and hygiene, and to avoid showers, baths, doing laundry and using outdoor hoses.

The council says it's investigating what caused the burst and has a project under way to build a second water pipe.
