The Navy will carry out a four-day training exercise in Auckland this week - using actors to simulate a crowd of protesters.

The Defence Force has issued a Facebook community alert about the exercise at Kauri Point near Chelsea Point - starting on Friday and running to Monday.

It said the activities would include the use of pyrotechnics, blank ammunition firing, drones and actors simulating a crowd of protesters.

A statement from the Defence Force said the exercise was routine and had been planned for a long time.

It said it was about force protection measures to ensure the safety and security of a ship - including how to deal with individual or group protests.
