Two separate shootings last weekend - in Ruatoria and Taradale - sparked a heightened police presence in the region.

A 36-year-old was arrested in Ruatoria today, charged with the unlawful possession of four firearms.

Police said they were still working through CCTV footage relating to the Taradale shooting, and were seeking any dash cam footage or additional CCTV from nearby.

Police have previously said they believed the shootings were the result of heightened gang tensions in the area. They said gang violence would not be tolerated.

Officers would continue to be armed "as long as is deemed necessary".

They announced yesterday six related arrests had been made.
