The scammers, usually operating from an overseas IP address, create a false email address in the name of an employee then email their payroll department requesting a change of bank account.

The employee's salary is then paid to the thieves.

Customer invoices sent by businesses via email are also being intercepted and replaced with a new bank account details.

Police advised that any bank account changes and email invoices should be verified in person or by phone.
