The cottage was built about 1870 in Scott Park by trader Captain James Penfold, but was badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes seven years ago.

The chimney collapsed, and two walls partially collapsed.

Today, the Christchurch City Council voted to stabilise and repair the building, including the collapsed walls and roof structure.

The council's head of parks, Brent Smith, said contractors would aim to retain some of cottage's original sod and cob fabric as part of repair work.

He said he hoped the repaired structure would showcase the simplicity and workmanship of the early European settler homes.
