State Highway 6 has reopened in both directions and the Westland District Council is now shifting its attention to the cleanup following the stormy weather over the past couple of days.

The council's Michelle Bunt said there was not too much work left to restore things to normal.

Power has been restored to almost all of the region - the only area that remains off-the-grid is Okarito, just north of Franz Joseph, and electricians are expected to arrive there shortly.

A community church at the Jackson River was also damaged by strong winds on Thursday night.

In Hokitika, there's a little damage to some store fronts and two houses along Revell Street.
