Diesel spill in Gisborne stream

4:53 pm on 9 January 2016

Residents in Gisborne are being urged to avoid fishing in a local stream because of a diesel spill.

The Gisborne District Council says about 40 litres of the fuel spilt into the Waikanae Stream today, and staff have been working to find out what is responsible.

The council says it was alerted to the spill yesterday, but at that stage only 10 litres had spilt.

The stream is a popular fishing spot and health warning signs have been put up nearby.

The council is also asking people not to collect shellfish.

It will monitor the spill throughout the rest of the weekend.
