An oil spill in Tauranga Harbour from a damaged fishing vessel has been cleaned up.
Bay of Plenty regional harbourmaster Peter Buell said the spill created an oil sheen about a hundred metres long and two to three metres wide in the port area.
Pilot Bay has been closed to swimming today as a precaution.
Mr Buell said the oil was captured using booms and he did not expect it to have caused harm to the environment.
He said water quality test results due back tomorrow would establish whether sewage from the vessel also spilled into the water.
Maritime New Zealand said the vessel had been detained and a hole will be patched before it goes to dry dock for repairs.
