Fuel has been spotted in Tauranga Harbour after a fishing vessel was found to be taking on water.
The Bay of Plenty Regional Council said booms were being used to contain the fuel, and were working well.
The vessel's tank, which contained sewage, was being emptied into a sucker truck.
It was not believed any sewage had made it into the harbour but samples had been taken to check, and the popular Pilot Bay swimming spot had been closed to swimmers today as a precaution.
