The only dedicated animal disaster management charity Animal Evac NZ is in the Canterbury region ready to help safely move stock and other wildlife to safety.

Operations commander, Mark Anderson, talks to Jesse about what they're doing and the challenges they are facing evacuating the larger animals safely.

1.27 Sustainability champion from NZ making her mark globally

A young New Zealand woman is making her mark in the world by fighting the good fight against food waste.

Francesca Goodman-Smith works for the Fight Food Waste Co-Operative Research Centre in Australia, after a stint overseeing waste minimisation throughout Foodstuffs' supermarkets in NZ.

AND she has just been named on a '30 under 30' list of rising sustainability leaders worldwide by GreenBiz.

To tell us more about her mission Francesca joins Jesse from across the Tasman.

1.34 Surfing the massive storm swells at Mahia 

Authorities on the east coast warned locals to stay away from the water late last week, due to the huge storm swells. But an intrepid, but experienced group of Gisborne surfers did the exact opposite and headed for the biggest waves they could find.

A usually dormant spot at Mahia became a big wave roller coaster, with huge 5 metre tubes that are only seen every few years in the area.

Blair Stewart is one of a group of surfers who tackled the huge waves, he tells us about the rare experience.

Actor Andrew McCarthy, star of 80's classics  like  St Elmo's Fire, Pretty In Pink and Weekend at Bernie's was quite happy to leave that period of his life in the past and never look back.  He struggled  with being labelled as part of the " Brat Pack" of young actors at the time including Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez, when in fact he was a loner, battling alcohol addiction and a complicated relationship with fame. After 30 years, he's ready to accept his place in 80's pop culture and shares his experience in his new book, Brat: An '80s Story.
