The next big stage production to hit Auckland has it's gala premiere tomorrow night at The Civic.  West Side Story is not new, the original Broadway production opened in September 1957, but this is a new international touring show which has played to sold out audiences in Paris, London, Beijing, Tokyo, and others.

The lead male is Kevin Hack who is here for today's opening song.

1:15 Saving Penguins Through Kaitiakitanga

A leading penguin expert is changing the way we look at conservation. Professor John Cockrem, of Massey University, is making it his goal to help the world's smallest penguin flourish again around our coastline. Inspired by the Māori concept of kaitiakitanga or guardianship, his scientific approach to conservation has evolved into a programme for kororā that's firmly rooted in Māori concepts.

1:25 International Yoga Day

International Yoga day is today and in New Zealand, if it were considered a sport, would be the biggest one in terms of participation numbers. Exercise New Zealand chief executive Richard Beddie says that there are around half a million New Zealanders taking part in fitness centres and gyms and the growth of those is being attributed to the increased popularity of yoga. He says over the past ten years there's been a 500 percent recorded growth in yoga related studios and teachers.

On June 21st 1930, the All Blacks met a touring British side for their first test at Carisbrook in Dunedin.  It was shocking weather with driving snow, but still a crowd of 28,000 people turned out.

1:40 Great album: Living in the USA by Linda Ronstadt

Living in the USA was the first album in history to ship double platinum, which means it has sold over 2 million advanced copies before leaving the factory.

The album cover also gave the sport of roller-skating a huge boost.

2:10 Call for Chemical Restriction

More than 200 scientists and medical professionals have called on the US Food and Drug Administration to ban certain chemicals in personal care products. Last year, the FDA banned 19 chemicals found in hand and body soap. And now the call is for the chemicals triclosan and triclocarban to be restricted. Saying they may be used in thousands of personal care and consumer products as well as in building materials. Environmental toxicologist, Louis Tremblay, of Nelson's Cawthron Institute explains.

Dianne has a couple of tracks from the New Steve Earle Album.  It's the Nashville based country singers 16th studio album.  "So You Wanna Be An Outlaw"  was released last Friday and comes just a little over two years after the previous release, although a duets album with Shawn Colvin was released last year..

The 62 year old began his career as a songwriter in Nashville aged just 19, although he didn't released his first EP until 1982.  His big break came four years later with the album "Guitar Town."   Since then he has won three Grammy's and had his songs recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Shawn Colvin, Emmylou Harris and others.  He also has film and television credits and has written a novel, a play, and a book of short stories.

Today's Bookmarks guest is former All Black Bernie McCahill.

He's also about to embark on the Ride of the Legends which involves sporting greats cycling from Wellington to Auckland. The ride is to raise money for Conductive Education of which former All Black coach, Wayne Smith is a patron.

3:10 An ultra-marathoner and his dog

When ultra marathoner Dion Leonard set off on a 250km run across China's Gobi desert, he expected to do the grueling race by himself. But he had a companion.  A little stray dog refused to leave his side and ran more than 100 kilometres across rough terrain to stay by Dion's side. 

When the race was over, Dion Leonard named the dog Gobi and decided to find a a way to bring the dog back with him to Scotland. But what happened next made the race seem easy.  Dion Leonard tells their story in his book,  Finding Gobi: A Little Dog with a Very Big Heart.
