1:15 The pros and cons of workplace drug testing

The Prime Minister Bill English has said the country's skill shortage is due to many young workers not being able to pass a drug test. He said companies tell him two or three times a week they are struggling to hire locals because they can't pass the drugs tests required under workplace safety rules.

We've spoken to a few employers in the building and plumbing industries who have  told us that drug use is a real issue, but drug testing works can create a climate of distrust as well, and can create more problems than it solves.

1:20 The Kiwi onion dip mystery thickens!

Last week we told you the story of Hayden Donnell's search for the inventor of Kiwi Onion Dip. The spinoff writer found Rosemary Dempsey, now 85, who is credited with inventing the dip made from mixing a packet of dried onion soup with a can of reduced cream.

Well the mystery has deepened.

Because it turns out that the Americans may have been doing this well before us.

We speak with Former 2ZB Woman's Hour presenter, Miria Finny, now 89, who says she has been using the recipe since the 1950's, and got it from an American friend.

2:20 Music Feature:  Hawaiian Music 1910-1930

Hawaiian Music is in the spotlight for this week's music feature.  More specifically the transmission of Hawaiian music to Australasia, Indonesia and India in the period 1910-1930.

It's the subject of research done towards a PhD by Auckland based artist Andrea Low, and there are a surprising number of New Zealand connections to her story, not the least of which is the connection to Andrea's own family.

3:10 Thomas Friedman: Addicted To Speed

Few would deny that 2016 was a year of turmoil. Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, and the continuing refugee crisis coupled with globalization and rapid technology development  has left many people feeling change is happening too fast.  It's all going to be OK says New York Times Columnist and Pulitzer prize winner, Thomas Friedman. He takes an optimistic view of our ability to fix big social, environmental and political problems in his book, Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations
