1:15 Stopping Teen Substance Abuse
According to the New Zealand Drug Foundation, New Zealanders as a population, have some of the higher drug-use rates in the developed world. Thirty two per cent of people aged under 18 report drinking alcohol, on more than three occasions in the past month, and 18 per cent describe themselves as current smokers. But are we doing enough to tackle the problem? Harvey B Milkman is professor of psychology at Metropolitan State College of Denver, and he teaches for part of the year at Reykjavik University, in Iceland. And he has been heavily involved in stamping out teen substance abuse. Twenty years ago, Icelandic teens were among the heaviest-drinking youths in Europe. Today, it tops the European table for the cleanest-living teens. But could this community-approach work here?
1:25 Taking On the Gaming Industry
With recent talk of equality and women's marches my next guest is a timely one, she's forging roads for females in the male dominated gaming industry. Claire Barilla's a recent graduate of Media Design School and is making waves in the gaming industry after her game art was snapped up by one of New Zealand's largest games company PikPok before she had even finished her last year at school. Also while still at studying Claire and five team mates started their own company releasing two games into the market, one of which won Best Student Award at Play By Play - an international event showcasing an interactive, public exhibition of grassroots game development talent and events.
1.35 Dan Slevin On Film
Hidden Figures - the hit film based on the untold true story of the African-American mathematicians and engineers who helped NASA get to space in the 60s - has just passed 100 million dollars at the US box office and watching it reminded our movie guy, Dan Slevin from RNZ Widescreen, about some of the other great films about NASA and the Space Race.
