Afternoons for Friday 2 December 2016
1:10 First Song - The Kiwileles: In Session
Tomorrow there will be 2,500 ukuleles being played by children from all over New Zealand. They are performing a 75-minute set of New Zealand music as part of The 10th Annual Ukulele Festival at Vector Arena. YouTube ukulele-playing teen sensations, Honoka and Azita, are the Kiwileles.
1:20 Mt Roskill By-Election
Political shock waves may hit on Saturday if Labour loses its traditionally safe seat of Mt Roskill. Vacated by Phil Goff when he took up the mayoral chains, it's widely tipped to continue to be a red electorate. But as we've just seen in the U.S anything can happen in politics. If Labour does lose, it's likely that there will be big ramifications for party leader Andrew Little. Political scientist, Bryce Edwards, goes over the possible scenarios.
1:25 Fifty Years of the TREKKA
One of the most ambitious chapters in New Zealand's manufacturing history opened 50 years ago today - the roll-out of the country's first and only mass-produced motor vehicle. The Trekka resembled an under-nourished Land Rover, and its creation was an unlikely blend of Kiwi can-do, with mechanicals from then-communist Czechoslovakia. Only 2,500 were produced, but there were hopes at one point of a flourishing export trade to Australia and Indonesia. Our very own, Todd Niall, has recounted the vehicle's short but compelling history in a book.
1:35 Critter Of The Week
We're focusing on fungi, in today's look at Critter Of The Week. Entoloma hochstetteri, or werewere-kokako, has the highest profile, featuring on the 50 dollar New Zealand bank note. And we take a look at one of our most threatened fungi, claustula fischeri.
1:40 Favourite Album
Green Party co-leader, James Shaw, has picked Purple Rain by Prince.
2:10 Film Review with Richard Swainson
2:20 NZ Live: Lydia Cole
A special treat on New Zealand Live today, a young woman who was here almost five years ago with the release of her debut album. Now, at last, a second album is ready for release and she is live on Afternoons to play us a couple of preview tracks today. The album is not out until February. She is Lydia Cole.
3:10 Food: Pickling
Kirsten Day talks pickling, and has some natural methods for pickling fruit and veges. And she shares a recipe for Indian Lemon or Lime Pickle
3:20 Geoff Marsland on Coffee
Wellington's coffee baron Geoff Marsland has just released his book, The Havana Coffee Story, written with Tom Scott. He founded Midnight Espresso in Cuba Street in 1989, back when most Wellington cafes still sold asparagus rolls and egg sandwiches. He then encouraged others to follow suit, and Wellington's cafe culture began to bloom.
