1:15 Our Children and the Future of Technology
The future of New Zealand's success relies on how school children manage technology today, one of New Zealand's leading tech experts says. Graeme Muller, chief executive of NZTech, is giving a talk today at the New Zealand ULearn education conference in Rotorua. And he says we need to develop a generation of creators not users. So what exactly should we be teaching our kids?
1:25 Debunking Brain Training Games
A new study has concluded that the only benefit of brain training games - is that they improve your ability to do brain training games. Psychology Professor Dan Simons of the University of Illinois has reviewed several brain training game and tests, and found they do not boost the brain.
1:35 The History of the New Zealand Wine Industry
Blenheimer, Marque Vue, Cold Duck…if you are over a certain age those names of early New Zealand wines will bring back a few memories.
Today in our visit to the sound archives Sarah Johnston from Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision has been down to the cellar to find some ‘vintage’ recordings about our early wine industry.
1:40 Favourite album: The Blues Brothers soundtrack
2:10 Banning Doggy Bags
A Kapiti restaurant has banned diners taking home doggy bags, citing food safety concerns as the reason they've banned takeaways.
Nikolai Smith is co-owner of The Social at Kapiti Lights, and the decision is gaining a bit of attention.
2.15 Music Critic: Colin Morris
Colin checks out new albums from Dolly Parton and Van Morrison
2:25 Bookmarks: Stuart Maunder
Our Bookmarks guest this week grew up on a farm in Australia but his life took an unexpected turn when he discovered Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. From that point he always wanted to be on stage. Even while studying Law he was treading the boards until the Australian Opera offered him a position as a trainee assistant stage manager. He quit university and has since traveled the world indulging in his passion for music and dance. For almost three years he's been General Director at New Zealand Opera whose production of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" moves to Christchurch next week.
3:10 Former child star, Mara Wilson
You can call Mara Wilson many things: a writer, the queen of comedy on Twitter, that actor from the Matilda movie but just don't call her cute. That word made her miserable in the 90's when she starred in movies like Mrs. Doubtfire and Miracle on 34th Street and of course, Matilda. By the time she hit her teens, she'd lost her mother to cancer, struggled with OCD and quit acting.
Mara Wilson describes her journey from child star to the writer and blogger she is today in her new book, Where Am I Now? True Stories Of Girlhood And Accidental Fame.
