The group of 38, including two children aged six and eight, was trapped in 13 vehicles along Waikaia Bush Road northwest of Roxburgh on Sunday night.
A helicopter got close to the snowbound group several times but adverse weather prevented it from landing and they were eventually brought down the mountain in snowcats. The police will question the extent of planning for the group after it took nearly 24 hours to rescue them in treacherous conditions.

Associate Professor Christoph Bartneck from the University of Canterbury's Human Interface Technology Lab says Lego made a very good study as it's been around for a long time. He says weapons were not initially in Lego which was focused on construction and farming but has recently become more focused on conflict and aggression.

2:10 New Twizel street lights impacting on dark sky reserve
Twizel residents are becoming increasingly frustrated over bright street lights in a new subdivision which are affecting the region's natural starlight spectacular.
For over a year some residents have voiced their opposition to lights on Boundary Terrace which are affecting the ability of tourists to photograph the night sky.
There are restrictions in the area on lighting and what's allowed in order to preserve the Aoraki McKenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
Resident Ken Chilton first brought the matter to the council's attention 12 months ago.
