Niue govt agencies told to watch spending

9:36 am on 8 October 2020

Government agencies in Niue have been urged to watch their spending closely, as the island struggles to overcome its budget deficit of $US3.2 million dollars.

Niue Broadcasting says it's nine months until the end of the financial year and treasury has sent out a list of directives, urging the departments to manage, control and monitor their budgets closely.

It said the government has very limited resources given the downturn in government revenues and the economy as a whole; with a substantial deficit.

In addition, it said the government faces "competing priorities on infrastructure, machinery acquisition and maintenance."
