Tahiti flooding eases, airport open again

The international airport in French Polynesia has reopened after flooding closed it yesterday afternoon.

An orange alert remains in force as rain and wind continues to affect the Society Islands.

Schools in Faaa on Tahiti are closed today after the heavy downpour caused widespread damage.

According to the government, the damage of the flooding is estimated to be about $US27 million.

The Society Islands have seen unusually heavy rain in recent weeks and flooding last month forced the airport on Tahiti to close.

Last week a fire-fighter was killed when he was washed away trying to clear a blocked drain.
