    Beginning in the North

    Born in Mysen, Norway, GARBAREK soon moved with his family to Oslo, where he spent his formative years. Presenter Norman Meehan describes how hearing John Coltrane on the radio in 1961 was an epiphany which started him on his path as a saxophonist. He studied jazz albums and spent time at the local jazz club, where he met many of the people who would be influential in his career (RNZ)
