(2) The Skatalites
Since forming in 1963, The Skatalites have always been the seminal ska group. Most of the original members came from a big band jazz background and together they revolutionised Jamaican music, laying the foundation for rock-steady, reggae, dub, dancehall and raga. Although founders Tommy McCook and Rolando Alphonso both died in 1998, the original duo of Lloyd Knibb (drums), and Lester Stirling (alto sax) remain at the core of this nine-piece group that continues to provide the irresistible Skatalites beat (RNZ)
